The Federal Knowledge Centre for Civil Protection (KCCE) of the FPS Interior has published the official statistics of the rescue areas for 2018 and 2019 on its website.
These statistics include the number of interventions carried out by the fire brigade per type of intervention and data concerning the number of civilian victims and intervention personnel.
If we compare the years 2018 and 2019 for the 32 rescue zones (out of 35) that communicated their data in due time for these two years, we notice first of all a substantial decrease in the number of interventions of the fire services (-19.8%). On the other hand, between 2018 and 2019, we observe a marked increase of +31.69% in the number of fires in dwellings:
Year Apartments Single-family houses Total dwellings
2018 2.477 6.209 8.686
2019 4.180 7.272 11.452
In 2019, response reports show 37 deaths at the scene of a dwelling fire (single-family homes and flats), compared to 33 in 2018.
