Generally, façade systems have also to fulfil different constructional functions. At the same time, they are also exposed to various hazards depending on the location of the building, e. g. fire including arson, flood, hail, heavy rain, and storm. In addition, building materials with flame retardants for fire protection may have to be disposed of as hazardous waste in the course of demolition if they contain environmentally harmful substances. Therefore, all relevant hazards and functions must be considered during the life cycle of construction.
The recommendations in this guideline are based on available loss experience, hazards control, and risk management in member countries of Insurance Europe. With these recommendations addressed to insurance takers, e. g. the building owner or operator, planer, and producer for façade systems, the appropriate planning, construction, maintenance, and demolition of façade systems should be supported in a practical way. This doesn’t affect national regulations for facades in member countries, especially related to fire protection. National regulations have to be followed in any case
