From 1 July 2022, it will be compulsory in the Netherlands to have a smoke detector on every habitable floor of a dwelling and in spaces leading to an emergency exit. The Building Decree (Bouwbesluit art 6.211) will be amended accordingly and it will therefore become a legal obligation to comply.
When will smoke detectors become mandatory?
- From 1 July 2022, smoke detectors will become compulsory.
- This applies to every floor in every house.
- Both owner-occupied and rented homes and both existing and new buildings must comply.
- The obligation also applies to enclosed spaces that serve as escape routes.
