6. Why ANPI is interested in NIS2
While ANPI and most of its clients do not fall directly under the scope of the NIS2 Directive, as they are not classified as important or essential entities, it is nonetheless crucial for the fire and intrusion sectors to pay close attention to this new directive for several reasons. The two most evident are the protection of sensitive data and the interconnection of fire and intrusion systems.
- Protection of Sensitive Data: Fire and intrusion detection systems handle sensitive data ranging from intrusion codes to evacuation plans for a facility. This type of data must be protected against any unauthorized intrusion. The NIS2 Directive imposes measures aimed at preserving the integrity and confidentiality of such sensitive data.
- Interconnection of Fire and Intrusion Systems: Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine a system that is not connected to the internet. Indeed, this growing interconnection represents a real advantage, allowing for remote monitoring and control of fire and intrusion installations. However, this connection also implies cyberattack risks and can compromise the security of the facilities concerned. The NIS2 Directive aims to strengthen the security of these connections to reduce the risks associated with cyber threats.
Conclusions
Preparation for and effectiveness of cybersecurity are more essential than ever for the proper functioning of the internal market and the protection of public security. Furthermore, cybersecurity is a key factor enabling many critical sectors to embrace digital transformation and fully reap the economic, social, and sustainable benefits of digitization.
The NIS2 Directive aims to define minimum rules concerning the operation of a coordinated regulatory framework, by establishing mechanisms for effective cooperation between the competent authorities of each Member State, updating the list of sectors and activities subject to cybersecurity obligations, and providing for adequate remedies and measures, essential for the effective implementation of these obligations.
The fire and intrusion sectors have a clear interest in closely monitoring the NIS2 Directive for several reasons, such as the protection of human life and property. By complying with the requirements of the NIS2 Directive and adopting appropriate cybersecurity measures, players in these sectors can strengthen the robustness of their security systems against emerging digital threats, thus ensuring optimal protection of individuals, property, and critical operations.
