The safety work begun the day after the fire that destroyed the roof of Notre-Dame is titanic.
It is not yet a question of aesthetics or even the choice of materials, but of dismantling! The dismantling of the metal scaffolding that surrounded the spire before the fire is still a problem.
There would be 200 to 300 tons of scrap metal to remove.
The chief architect of the site, Philippe Villeneuve, explains that the original structure of the scaffolding was completely independent of the spire. When the fire broke out, the scaffolding did not collapse, unlike the spire, but the tubes were welded together and deformed as the spire fell.
Today the whole scaffolding structure is weakened and threatens to collapse.
For the time being, a floor is being installed above the heap of metal. Next, the weakened scaffolding will be girdled on three levels and acrobatic workers will descend along ropes to cut out each tube one by one. This operation could be completed in January 2020. That is our goal," says the architect, who adds that it is "difficult to envisage a date for the end of the consolidation period. We will not be able to be really reassured before mid-2020".
